CELEBRITY INFORMATION: MARILYN MONROE - BORN NORMA JEANE MORTENSON - June 1, 1926 August 5, 1962 was an American actress and model. Famous for playing comedic characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was representative of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Marilyn continues to be considered a major pop culture idol and is ranked #1 as the world's most famous celebrity icon. Andre photographed Marilyn privately in 1945, 1946, 1949 and 1953. His iconic photographs capture her transformation from sensitive and ambitious ingénue into Marilyn Monroe.

In the summer of 1949, Marilyns star began to rise. While in New York on a publicity tour for Love Happy, Marilyn called Andre and said Andre, lets take pictures again! Do you have a nice bathing suit I can wear? When he picked her up at the Pierre hotel, he discovered a magnificent, elegant and sophisticated young woman.

But de Dienes preferred a very casual Marilyn for his pictures. He took her out of the craziness of the city to Tobay Beach on Long Island.

Marilyn adores the camera almost as much as it adores her. Scampering confidently and joyfully on the beach, hair golden, skin luminous, she is on the brink of stardom and feels it. The 1949 Tobay Beach photographs show her startling transformation from shy Norma Jeane into sex kitten Marilyn Monroe.

Andre studied art and photography in Paris and by 1938 he emigrated to the USA and settled in New York to work for Esquire, Vogue, Life and Montgomery Ward. Andre moved to California to pursue his real passion photographing nudes and outdoor scenes. Andre became one of Hollywood's most acclaimed photographers and for his beautiful photographs of Marilyn Monroe. De Dienes captured Marilyn on film throughout her entire career, from Norma Jeane to the Hollywood legend. From Marilyn's first photo session in 1945 until her untimely death in 1962, the star and her photographer shared a unique and loving relationship.
